Special Master / Court Expert / Mediation

The federal district court frequently appoints us to assist both in litigation and in general court administration. Ed Swanson has been appointed by the Northern District of California as a special master in several cases involving disputes over fees and discovery matters. He has also served as a mediator in significant federal matters concerning civil rights and financial disputes.  For the past several years, Ed Swanson has served as the court expert in Armstrong v. Schwarzenegger, a class action suit against the California Department of Corrections concerning violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. He also co-chairs the Northern District of California’s Criminal Practice Committee, a committee consisting of members of the judiciary, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Federal Defender’s Office, and other court personnel. Mary McNamara is the Criminal Justice Act Liaison for the Northern District of California, serves on the district’s Criminal Justice Act Administration Committee, and chairs the district’s Fee Review Committee for CJA cases.  She recently served on a merit selection panel for the appointment of new magistrate judges to the district and has chaired a magistrate reappointment committee. She also presents training sessions for federal lawyers under the auspices of the federal court. Both Ed Swanson and Mary McNamara have co-chaired the Northern District of California’s Lawyer Representative Committee.
